PIERRE, S.D. - The state Transportation Commission has awarded a $61,000 contract to install a new warning system on the Pierre Street railroad bridge.
Pierre Safety Committee chairman Larry Weiss says the contract was awarded to Muth Electric of Mitchell. The project is expected to be done by Nov. 19.
Officials say there have been several collisions between large vehicles and the bridge, which has an 11-foot-3-inch clearance.
The detection system will use a light beam that will activate flashing lights near the bridge when an over-height vehicle passes.
