GILLETTE, Wyo. - Thousands of pounds of comfort items that a volunteer in Gillette collected to send to soldiers in Afghanistan finally have a way to get there.
Mary Zylstra collected 7,340 pounds of supplies in Gillette over Memorial Day weekend for soldiers but then learned the military no longer accepts civilian donations on its flights.
On Thursday, the North Carolina-based nonprofit group Soldiers' Angels agreed to mail the donated supplies to soldiers. Campbell County Commissioner Amir Sancher offered to pay to ship the goods from Gillette to North Carolina.
The shipping will cost about $3,600. A few years ago, Sancher had promised to donate his salary from the commission to charitable organizations.
