HAMILTON, Mont. - Officials with the Bitterroot National Forest say a fire in the Sapphire Mountains about 12 miles northeast of Hamilton has burned between 500 and 1,000 acres.
Fire officials say more than 100 firefighters, including three 20-member Hot Shot Crews, are fighting the fire along with six engines and four helicopters. Another hotshot crew was scheduled to arrive Monday afternoon.
The fire is burning in heavy timber in steep, rugged terrain. Forest officials say the fire burned actively overnight, with some flames nearing 200 feet long.
The fire was first spotted early Sunday afternoon and it is burning about 1.5 miles from private land.
The cause of the fire is not known, but officials say it could likely be a holdover fire started by a recent thunderstorm.
