BISMARCK, N.D. - North Dakota's oil patch is turning out about 300,000 barrels of crude per day, or double the state's production two years ago.
State Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says the state produced a record 9.2 million barrels in May, up from 8.5 million barrels in April. Those are the latest figures available because oil production numbers typically lag at least two months.
A record 4,893 wells were producing in May, up from the previous record of 4,810 set in April. Helms says nearly all are drilling the rich Bakken shale and Three Forks-Sanish oil reservoirs in western North Dakota. North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says the state probably is producing about 310,000 barrels of crude at present, based on preliminary reports.
