BH Area Habitat for Humanity raise walls Thursday for future home in Sturgis
STURGIS, S.D. – Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity raised the walls on the future home of Sabrina Whitford on Fleet Street in Sturgis Thursday morning.
Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie thanked all of the volunteers for giving of themselves so that others, like Sabrina, have a place to call home.
Ainslie said the mayor and the city council also wanted to extend their appreciation for everything Habitat for Humanity is doing in the community and for Sabrina and her family.
Sturgis residents have been meeting with Habitat to learn about this current build, future opportunities, and are organizing a committee to help create more opportunities for affordable home ownership in Sturgis in the years to come. Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, City of Sturgis and local business owners are beginning to get involved in making this program a success.
Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen lauded the efforts of the homeowner, the volunteers and the program. “They are not only building a home, but also a stronger community,” the mayor said.
Veronica Grosek, Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Bureau Executive Director notes: “Our board has agreed that partnering to support Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity is a great way to advance home ownership for our local workforce. Sabrina’s employment with Black Hills Special Services in Sturgis means so much to our community. Fortunately, with this new home she will have a short commute to work and will be able to continue her important work right here.”
