Marilyn Grace Jerde
Jerde, Marilyn Grace (Soma),
Age 83 of Sioux Falls, formerly of Piedmont, SD, went to be with her Lord February 13, 2021 surrounded by family.
Marilyn Grace Soma was born August 13th, 1937 in Mitchell, South Dakota, the ninth of eleven children of Ole G. Soma and Grace Hommersand Soma. She was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon where the family attended services. The family farmed near Mount Vernon, later renting a farm near Oldham, SD, until purchasing a farm near Crooks, SD, where her parents lived until they retired. They attended and became members of West Nidaros Lutheran Church where she was confirmed in the Christian faith. She attended public schools in Baltic, SD, graduating with high honors.
She was a dedicated Christian woman who desired to strengthen her faith, serve others by increasing her knowledge and skills, and sought to obtain a college degree. She attended Augustana college in Sioux Falls with a small scholarship, faith, and determination. With her personality and talents, she obtained loans and students jobs including secretarial work in the President’s office. While at Auggie she met student Myron Jerde. They fell in love and were married August 28,1958, at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, Vestre Nidaros Kirke. They graduated from Augustana in 1960.
Over the years, they were blessed with six beautiful children. All their children were baptized, confirmed, and raised in the Christian faith. Marilyn was a dedicated Christian and read her Bible daily, reading it cover-to-cover several times. Her Bibles were well worn. She taught Sunday School, confirmation classes, and held office on church boards, both local and national. She was active with the public school, PTA, and served on the school board, being interested in education her entire life. She also taught school in Vermillion and Minneapolis while her husband was in post graduate school.
After her children were “out of the nest”, desiring to complete her education, she went back to college obtaining her Master’s Degree from SDSU in Guidance and Counseling.
Marilyn loved being around people, but also valued her quiet time and time for prayer. She was active in Bible study on her own and within small groups. “Be still and know that I am God,” was one of her favorite reflective Psalms. Marilyn also loved to travel with her husband visiting family, bird-watching, and seeing and doing new things, but always found comfort in returning home. Her greatest joy however was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Ardis, Richard, Elaine, Myrna, Norma Jean, Howard, Merrill, and Robert Lee.
Survivors include her husband Myron, children Mark, Stephan (Karen), David (Kathy), Phil (Jill), Curt, Lisa (Paul), twenty-seven grandchildren, one great grandson, sister Betty (Dennis), brother Arvin (Joanne), sister-in-laws Marian Soma and Dorene Soma, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Memorials are preferred to Abiding Savior Christian education programs, or donor’s choice. A family service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 20. A link for viewing the service by webcast will be available at:
