New state law opens up three new off-sale liquor licenses for Meade County

STURGIS, S.D. – A new state law that takes effect in July means Meade County will offer three new off-sale liquor licenses at their July meeting.

The Legislature amended state law that allows county government to distribute licenses that would let businesses sell package liquor for off-site consumption.

There are five locations within Meade County that could apply for the licenses under the law. Those off-sale outlets are located in unincorporated areas of the county and allowed because of the presence of a post office. They are B.J.’s/Black Hawk Oil in Black Hawk, Nellie’s in Enning, Reno’s Casino in Black Hawk, the Black Hawk Bar and Grill and the Howes Store.

The county is offering the licenses at $50,000 each.

County officials plan to offer the licenses as per a lottery during the first 30 days they are available. If there are no applicants, the licenses will be offered on a first come, first-served basis.
