Sunday evening thunderstorms bring hail to parts of Western South Dakota

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Some spring thunderstorms brought hail to parts of the area Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City says parts of Pennington and Meade Counties reported quarter sized hail.

One storm skirted just to the north of Sturgis, but brought hail to the Bear Butte valley area.

Northeast of Fruitdale in Butte County, one inch hail was reported and just to the west of Box Elder, 1.75 inch hail was observed. Nisland and Belle Fourche also reported 1.00 inch hail.

Some larger hailstones – the size of ping pong ball sized – were reported near Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Forecasters say it will be a stormy week. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected today through Wednesday, with widespread showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday. Severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday and Wednesday. The severe threat will diminish Thursday and Friday, but there may be some locally heavy rain.
